I often stop for a moment when driving or walking, to take in the Lincolnshire view. The sky is so big and the clouds can be mesmerising. The lilting, uncluttered landscape draws the eye and I’m mindful of a time when people lived with less but may have had more.

Hay makes a come back in Lincolnshire!
Due to a productive mix of rain and sunshine this month, the grass has grown in Lincolnshire and hay is being harvested!
The latest grass growth data, displayed on the Forage for Knowledge website shows that the seasonal grass growth rate for June 2026 is higher compared to the same time last year. https://ahdb.org.uk/knowledge-library/forage-for-knowledge
It’s a relief to many. Maybe there will be enough hay to go round this winter, the cost will stabilise and equine owners won’t feel left out in the cold.
Many Lincolnshire equines and owners were affected by a hay shortage during the winter months of 2025- 2026. The BBC reported the shortage in September 2025 when they said that “Agriculture merchants and farmers say the amount of hay they have been able to produce has been "seriously limited" this year.”

Kaitlyn Ward, a Lincolnshire equine owner, said that “ We struggled to find hay after our usual supplier ran out. The closest hay we found was nearly an hour away.”
Hay having doubled in price, plus the additional cost of its delivery from suppliers in surrounding counties meant that this staple food for equines was not only hard to source, it also became unaffordable.
Mia Richardson, a Lincolnshire equine owner said “A £35 round bale of hay went up to £70 or more and this did not include delivery which also went up because of the price of diesel.” She went on to say that “ if you’re not a business, if your horses are for pleasure, you’re going to want to source small amounts of hay on a regular basis as opposed to buying in bulk from agricultural merchants.”
Mia said that in the end she stopped looking for hay. She turned to haylage, available via an acquaintance who had agricultural connections. Haylage was not in short supply and so it held its usual price. Mia stated that she was fortunate as haylage was a suitable alternative for her horses, it is not appropriate for all horse breeds.
Charlotte Blow and equine owner who works on a farm in Lincolnshire said, “Even though I didn’t struggle for hay, I had to put my ponies on haylage throughout the winter as otherwise I wouldn’t have enough hay for the summer months as I like to offer hay throughout the summer months too.”
Another equine owner reported that “owning two 17 hand horses who go through one round bale of hay a week, the hay shortage left us struggling.” Unable to get hold of hay, as their supplier had also run out, and because other suppliers were unable to take on new customers, they resorted to buying haylage from Mole Country Stores. One bag cost £8.
Equine owners' experiences during the 2025- 2026 hay shortage varied. The horse world, known for its culture of hyper connectivity via informal networks, unfortunately left some horse owners excluded.
In 2025, Zoe Richardson of Horse Herd People established a Lincolnshire Equine Directory to support equine owners, giving everyone in Lincolnshire a place to turn to for help and support.Zoe said “ Horse Herd People hopes to promote Communication, Community and Collaboration in the world of horses. It is so important to share knowledge. There is room for every kind of horse owner, everyone brings something of value. All horse owners need the same services, share the same struggles and are passionate about what they do.” Zoe added “If anyone would like to add their Lincolnshire service to the directory please contact me via Facebook or via email. I will add you to the list. You may already be on it as the list is pretty extensive now.”

With the first harvest in, we now look forward to a second cut in late July or August. Let’s hope that the weather cooperates and that this year it is a less stressful, more cost effective winter for all.
